US Dollar News

The dollar languished on Wednesday as traders awaited fresh signals regarding the timing of interest rate hikes to address ongoing inflationary pressures. The greenback weakened from an 18-month high in the previous session as oil prices eased and investors reassessed the AI-fueled rally that has supported demand for US assets. The euro maintained its gains as budgetary concerns in France sustained elevated regional bond yields, leaving markets in a state of unease. Attention now shifts to the impending release of US consumer price index data, along with speeches from Federal Reserve policymakers that may elucidate the trajectory for interest rates. “The risk is the core CPI surprises to the upside because of strong consumer demand and higher costs, pushing up market pricing of an October Fed hike and the USD,” Carol Kong said in a note.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, edged 0.02% lower to 102.16, following a 0.35% slide on Tuesday. The US Labour Department is set to publish its Consumer Price Index for September, anticipated to show a month-on-month increase of 0.6%, following a 0.4% rise in August.

Meanwhile, annual inflation is projected to accelerate to 3.6%, up from 3.4%. Additionally, the Federal Reserve is set to release its Beige Book. Traders assign a 77% probability to the Federal Reserve maintaining the current interest rates during its meeting on October 27-28, an increase from the 51% probability observed a month prior. Additionally, the market anticipates approximately 75 basis points of tightening by the end of 2027, as indicated by CME Group’s FedWatch Tool. Investors have retreated from their positions regarding a potential Fed rate hike later this month, following comments from two policymakers advocating for the collection of additional evidence prior to determining the necessity of further tightening.

Additionally, Fed Governor Christopher Waller noted that inflation expectations are “well anchored.
